At the beginning of the 20th century, the May Fourth
Movement heralded modern Chinese literature, when modern novels replaced classical ones.
The first representative modern Chinese novel is the Journal of a Madman
by Lu Xun (1881-1936). Lu Xun was a great literary writer, thinker, revolutionary fighter
as well as the founding father of Chinese modern literature. Written in the from of a
diary, Journal of a Madman laid bare the hypocrisy and cruelty
of the feudal society through the eyes and emotions of a lunatic. After Lu Xun came Mao
Dun, Ba Jin, Guo Moruo, Lao She and other great writers and poets. |
